Anti-snoring devices

What is snoring?

When the soft palate and tongue is relaxed during sleep the natural airway narrows. This may create vibrations of the soft tissues in the throat and this is known as snoring.

For many of us snoring is a sign of deep sleep but for others it may indicate a more serious problem. An estimated 60% of all men and 40% of women over 60 years old as well as 10% of men and 5% of women of 30 years old will snore. Snoring may be a sign of sleep apnoea. Sleep apnoea occurs when the airway completely collapses. The airway is completely blocked and temporarily lungs and brain are not provided with air.

Sleep disturbances due to snoring and sleep apnoea may potentially lead to daily tiredness, heart problems and an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

Studies have shown that approx 20% of serious injuries from motor vehicle accidents are related to driver sleepiness.
“People with sleep apnoea may have the same risk of road traffic accidents as people who drive at twice the legal alcohol levels”.
Dr.Costello, Consultant Physician, Beaumont Hospital and Spokesman for Irish Sleep Society

Snoring and disturbed sleep can severely impact the quality of people’s lives. There have been many advances through dentistry to assist people who suffer from sleep apnoea or who suffer from snoring and disturbed sleep.

In many cases, intra-oral devices can help with snoring. The mechanism is based on a controlled and comfortable advancement of the mandible, which increases the muscle tone in the respiratory tract area, allowing the air to flow freely. As a result, snoring is eliminated and the episodes of apnoea are reduced, resulting in a better quality of life for the snorer (and partner!)
