A crown is a type of cap that completely covers a real tooth. It is made from metal, metal and porcelain, or a ceramic material. It is fixed in your mouth with an adhesive. Crowns can be fitted where your tooth is broken down by decay or trauma, also to make your tooth look better.

To fit a crown, the old tooth will need to be reduced in size to a peg shape onto which the crown will be fixed with adhesive. It can take up to two to three weeks for a dental laboratory to custom make a crown so you will have a temporary crown fitted for this time.

Crowns are commonly placed on teeth that have been endodontically treated as they tend to be become more brittle after the nerve has been removed.
